A former agent accused of stealing part of Hanwha Eagles pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin's past down payment for ramen advertisements was sentenced to prison in the first trial.
According to Yonhap News on the 23rd, Judge Sohn Seung-woo of the Seoul Southern District Court sentenced Jeon, a former agent, to two and a half years in prison on charges of fraud and other charges. The court did not explain the reason for the sentencing because the accused was not present.
Jeon signed a contract with food company Ottogi in 2013 to be an advertisement model for Korean ramyun. After moving to the U.S. Major League in 2013, Jeon served as an advertisement model for Ottogi ramyun for two years. Jeon reportedly stopped acting as an agent after moving to the Major League and signing the contract for an advertisement model for Ottogi in 2013.
Jeon deceived Ryu that he signed a contract for 700,000 dollars after receiving 850,000 dollars as a down payment. Jeon was indicted without detention in 2018 on charges of secretly pocketing the difference. The difference of 150,000 dollars is about 180 million won in Korean won based on the exchange rate at the time.
The prosecution asked Jeon for a five-year prison term in March last year, saying, "The defendant is an agent of domestic activities, such as acting as a domestic advertising contractor for the victim, but please consider the poor nature of the crime, such as defrauding the victim of the difference in model fees and forging documents under the victim's name in the process."
Meanwhile, Ryu started his professional career in 2006 when he joined Hanwha as the second overall pick in the second round.
